HOW TO VISIT ZANZIBAR

The Way To Visit Zanzibar

Today I am going to introducing the way to visit Zanzibar.

There are roughly divided into two way. One is by ferry and one is by plane.

How to visit Zanzibar by ferry

First I’ll tell you how to visit by ferry

This is the ferry port of Zanzibar

If you want to come to Zanzibar by ferry, first you need to come by plane to the

mainland of Tanzania.

Because there is a ferry terminal only in Dar es salaam head for Zanzibar.

This is the ferry port of Dar es Salaam

Picking The Ferry Head For Zanzibar Wisely

There are two ferry companies connecting between Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam.

“Azam Marine” and “Flying Horse”.

Actually ferry of Flying Horse’s fare is cheaper than the Azam Mrine’s ferry but I extremely recommend the ferry of Azam Marine for the foreigners.

Do you know why?? There are three major reasons.

  • The number of ships
  • Difference in time required
  • aspect of safety

From now I’ll explain about each of these reasons one by one.

First, number of ships are completely different.

In case of ferry from Dar es salaam to Zanzibar, Flying Horse have only one

shipping in a day but Azam Marine have four ships in a day.

Here is the schedule of Azam Marine’s ferry from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar.

Ferry from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar
Departure Arrival Frequency
07:00 09:00 Daily
09:30 11:30 Daily
12:30 14:30 Daily
16:00 18:00 Daily

From this table you can see Azam Marine has a many choice from morning to evening.

Compared to the Azam Marine, Flying Horse has only one ship at 12:00

The case of Azam Marin’s ferry from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam is also depart at same time as ferry from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar.

The case of Flying Horse’s ferry from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam there is only one ship at 21:00.

Next is the difference of time required.

In the case of Azam Marine, It takes one hour and a half for one way.

It does not change the time it takes to get on the ferry any time.

Even if you take the ferry from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar either.

In the case of Flying Horse, the time it takes depends on where you take the ferry.

For example if you take the ferry from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar at 12:00 it takes three hours. It takes twice as long as Azam Marine.

When you take the Flying Horse’s ferry from Zanzibar you have to be careful.

I write that the departure time is at 21:00, by that ship arrival at 06:00 at the morning.

It means it takes 9 hours ,cause of Anchored on the sea on the way.

Last is aspect of safety

In the Flying Horse’s ferry, there is a high percentage of local passengers and if you take a ferry from Zanzibar you have to spend the night.

If you are beginner of African journey it is better to use Azam Marine especially from the Zanzibar.

This is why it is better for foreigners to use Azam Marine.

More Detailed Information About Azam Marine

I will provide you more detailed information about Azam Marine here.

There are seats divided into 4 classes in the ferry.

Price of Azam Marine Ferry (one way)
Adult Child(below 10years)
Economy $35 $25
Business $40 $40
VIP $50 $50
Royal $60 $60

*Fare for residents is half of this price

*Fare of Flying Horse’s ferry is $35 for foreigner.

This table show you the difference of price by class and age.

As you can see expect in Economy class price does not different.

I think VIP or Royal seat going to be a very comfortable trip but I recommend you to take a Economy class.

Not only because the price is cheap.

In the ferry you are able to go up to the deck.

How do you think about spending an hour and a half on a boat trip while looking at the Indian Ocean.

The wind feels good and it will be an unforgettable memory.

So if you enjoy boat trip on the deck, the class of the seat does not matter

This is why I recommend to choose Economy class.

How to visit Zanzibar by Plane

If you want to visit Zanzibar easily, choose the plane is going to be good.

It is called “Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, and this is the picture

As the name suggests it is an international airport.

So it is possible for you to come directly to Zanzibar from foreign country.

Perhaps it is able to come from your country directly.
